Our History

ACHE is one of the oldest certifying associations of hypnotherapy defending the free and open practice of hypnosis

The History of the American Council of Hypnotist Examiners (ACHE)

The American Council of Hypnotist Examiners (ACHE) has played a foundational role in the evolution of professional hypnotherapy in the United States and beyond. Established in 1980 by Gil Boyne, a widely recognized pioneer of modern hypnotherapy, ACHE was created with a clear purpose: to bring professional structure, credibility, and ethical standards to a field that was often misunderstood and inconsistently represented.

Today, ACHE has certified more than 9,500 members worldwide and remains one of the oldest hypnosis organizations in the United States, continuing its mission to strengthen, protect, and advance the professional practice of hypnotherapy.

A Vision Born from a Pioneer: Gil Boyne and the Creation of ACHE

Gil Boyne was not only a practitioner and educator—he was a major force in shaping modern hypnotherapy as a professional discipline. Through decades of experience, Boyne recognized a reality that is still relevant today:

Hypnotherapy could be powerful and life-changing, but the field needed clear standards to ensure the public was protected and practitioners were appropriately trained.

In response, Boyne established ACHE in 1980 as an organization dedicated to:

  • defining what ethical, competent hypnotherapy practice should look like,

  • creating credible pathways for professional certification, and

  • supporting serious practitioners who wished to serve the public responsibly.

From its earliest days, ACHE emphasized that hypnotherapy should be practiced with skill, integrity, and accountability—not as entertainment, not as vague “mind control,” and not as a loosely defined service with no standards.

Early Commitment to Education and Certification Standards

From the outset, ACHE stood apart from many organizations by establishing specific educational requirements for certification.

Rather than offering certification as a simple membership benefit, ACHE developed standards that required:

  • structured education and training,

  • demonstrated competency,

  • and adherence to professional guidelines.

This commitment positioned ACHE as a leader in defining certification as a meaningful professional benchmark—something that could help both practitioners and the public understand what qualified hypnotherapy practice truly entails.

Over time, ACHE’s certification programs grew to reflect the needs of practitioners at different stages and specialties, while remaining grounded in rigorous expectations and ethical accountability.

ACHE’s Ongoing Role in Professionalizing Hypnotherapy

ACHE has long served as a stabilizing force in the hypnotherapy profession, particularly because hypnotherapy is not regulated consistently across jurisdictions.

In many regions, there is no single licensing body for hypnotherapists. As a result, the responsibility for ensuring training quality often falls to professional associations. ACHE has played this role by developing:

  • consistent training expectations,

  • approval standards for member schools,

  • and ethical codes that support professional conduct.

ACHE requires its members and schools to work within ACHE-approved guidelines, as well as the laws and regulatory requirements of their specific state or country. This helps maintain clarity across regions while supporting responsible practice worldwide.

A Member-Driven Nonprofit Organization

ACHE is a nonprofit organization operated for the members, by the members. It is guided by a dedicated Board of Directors, composed of volunteers elected by ACHE members, and supported by the Executive Director.

This structure reflects one of ACHE’s strongest values: the profession must be shaped by ethical, trained professionals—not external agendas.

The Board and leadership work continuously to:

  • uphold certification and education standards,

  • maintain organizational integrity,

  • support ACHE schools and members,

  • and protect the freedom to practice responsibly.

Protecting the Free and Open Practice of Hypnotherapy

One of ACHE’s most important contributions over the past several decades has been its commitment to advocacy and legislative protection.

Over the years, there have been repeated attempts to minimize, mischaracterize, or restrict hypnotherapy—often through legislation or regulatory measures that misunderstand the modality or attempt to impose overly limiting requirements.

For more than 30 years, ACHE has actively worked—unceasingly—to prevent misguided legislation from being imposed on the hypnotherapy profession. This has included efforts to:

  • monitor legislative activity,

  • respond to proposals that could limit professional practice,

  • educate lawmakers and governing bodies about hypnotherapy,

  • and clarify misinformation when it arises.

This is not only about preserving the rights of professionals—it is also about ensuring the public continues to have access to ethical, competent hypnotherapy services.

A Living Legacy: Standards, Education, and Integrity

ACHE’s history is more than a timeline—it is a living legacy. The organization continues to evolve in response to:

  • changes in public understanding,

  • developments in education and online learning,

  • and shifting regulatory climates.

Yet the core mission remains constant:

  • promote excellence, integrity, and clarity in both hypnotherapy education and professional practice,

  • support qualified practitioners through meaningful certification,

  • and defend the field against restriction and misinformation.

Looking Forward: Advancing the Profession

As hypnotherapy continues to grow in popularity and public interest, the need for credible standards becomes even more important. ACHE remains committed to:

  • strengthening professional identity,

  • supporting ethical schools and educators,

  • providing up-to-date guidance to members,

  • and ensuring that hypnotherapy continues to be recognized as a respected and developing profession.

With its roots in Gil Boyne’s pioneering work and its strength grounded in its member-driven structure, ACHE continues to serve as a steady leader in the ongoing advancement of hypnotherapy.
